Millenium Ecosystem Assessment
Millenium Ecosystem Assessment
problems are global and thus international
We now have a growing awareness that regions, countries, and continents cannot be considered in an isolated way given the growth of human populations, its impacts, and our technologies.
The Milllenium Ecosystem Assessment is an immense international scientific program with the goal of providing scientific information on the consequences of ecosystem change for human well being. The intended users are decision makers as well as the public. The findings of the project are extensive, and are freely available on the internet.
This four year project was launched in 2001, and involved over 1300 authors from 95 countries, and cost $17 million dollars.
extensive resources
The MEA has a huge volume of useful information on what is happening to ecosystems and humans around the world.
These are worth exploring on their website. Besides reports, there are graphic resources, complete presentations, and videos.

scenarios
The MEA group took and interesting approach to generating and evaluating possible future scenarios. (see Chapter 6, Scenario Report). The team combined extensive interviews and consultations with people with a modelling approach. The ongoing interaction between a story approach and analysis resulted in scenarios associated with of 4 different possible future policy directions. These scenarios were used to project various consequences for 4 different broad segments of the society; rich and poor in urban and rural regions. (I was engaged to develop illustrations of all the variations as aids to describing the scenarios.)
